Acorn Weevils Forest Kindergarten - Week 1
Acorn Weevils Forest Kindergarten - Week 1
January 5, 2021 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Zach's Farm, 7 Colby Turner Ln, York, ME 03909, USA
Program Manager - Todd Dupont Contact: todd@whitepineprograms.org
This is not your ordinary early childhood program. The Acorn Weevils Forest Kindergarten are exposed to the joys of intimate connection to nature and finding their place in a community of peers and mentors. They have incredible moments of resiliency, courage, pride, and beauty.
While a full day in the forest can seem a long time for children this age, this time allows for invaluable opportunities to learn about our energy and needs at different times of day. The full day also invites us to dive deeper into projects, adventure further to new places, and immerse ourselves completely in the lessons that the forest presents.
There are moments of intense joy and others of overwhelming emotion. We ask a lot of the children. We teach them to monitor and meet their individual needs. Acorn Weevils are coached not only to help themselves but to support their peers. They take care of their gear and pack things up themselves, carrying their backpacks throughout the woods, on – and off – trail. Variable New England weather, mosquitoes, unfamiliar forest, and being away from their daily caretakers are all challenges that Weevils face frequently. All of this amounts to a very different experience than they may have ever had before. We are privileged to be a part of their growth and learning in a loving environment and to witness them emerge even more resilient children!

Ways of the Wild - Tuesday Session Week 1
Ways of the Wild - Tuesday Session Week 1
January 5, 2021 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Zach's Corn Maze, 7 Colby Turner Ln, York, ME 03909, USA
Program Manager: Amy Beal Contact: amy@whitepineprograms.org
Ways of the Wild is a very special program. Harkening back to White Pine’s first days as an outdoor school for home-school children, we now welcome 24 kids on Tuesdays and Thursdays to enjoy long days outdoors learning, tracking and exploring. Small groups with a 4-1 ratio are led by caring and skilled mentors who provoke curiosity and conversation about all things natural.
Children arrive at 9 am, gather together for a welcome circle and then venture off to explore the incredible land at Zach’s Farm in York. Days are filled with activities, lessons and challenges that focus on awareness, wilderness survival skills and community building. The opportunity to experiment with new skills in a safe and nurturing environment builds confidence and self esteem while teaching valuable competencies that remain with participants for life.
The program is outdoors no matter the weather (we only cancel for school-based snow days and wind), building resiliency and respect for the environment. Children experience the same piece of land over three seasons, building a sense and relationship to place (a valuable life skill). The program structure mixes in free play with structured activities that invite children to observe and engage in the changes happening around them in the trees, animals, plants and landscape. Experiential learning engages the senses in ways that serve children for the rest of their lives.
At the end of the program day, the groups gather together for a closing circle, offering the opportunity for sharing the day’s experiences and some fun staff shenanigans. Children develop a comfort for speaking in a group and having their voices heard by their peers and mentors. Participants finish the day dirty, tired and chock full of stories to share with their families.

Ways of the Wild - Thursday Session Week 3
January 21, 2021 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Zach's Farm, 7 Colby Turner Ln, York, ME 03909, USA

Acorn Weevils Forest Kindergarten - Week 4
Acorn Weevils Forest Kindergarten - Week 4
January 26, 2021 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Permaculture Garden Design Workshop Workshop
Permaculture Garden Design Workshop Workshop
January 30, 2021 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
White Pine Programs (admin offices), 170 Cider Hill Rd, York, ME 03909, USA
Program Manager: Ryan Busby
Contact: ryan@whitepineprograms.org
Are you interested in deepening your interaction with nature through gardening? Then this workshop is for you. White Pine Lead Educator and Certified Permaculture Designer,
Ryan Busby, will facilitate a real-world, hands on, collaborative permaculture design process. Every step will be shared including site assessment, visioning, schematic drawing and plant selection. Taking the time to plan ahead will result in a beautiful and smoothly functional space that will save countless hours and hassle in gardening. Whether you are looking to grow your own food, provide food for pollinators or create a beautiful garden sanctuary for yourself or your organization you will leave with the tools to make it happen.
We will be working on the design for a new garden plot at White Pine’s Headquarters which was the site of our Establishing a No-Till Garden Workshop in November. Come be a part of the ongoing creation of an intentional space where White Pine will facilitate the interaction between people and nature through tending this garden.
- Learn how to assess your site’s elemental influences like sun, wind, water, soil, and people
- Practice visioning techniques that sharpen our ability to create the space we want to be in
- Learn and practice basic mapping and drawing techniques for planning your space
- Learn where to find resources for selecting plants and how to assemble a plant list
- Learn how to plan companion plantings, assemble guilds and design polycultures
- Create a concept design and layout for the new garden at White Pine HQ
